W’Cup: Security beefed up ahead of Sunday’s final

The National Public Safety Secretariat of the Brazilian Ministry of Justice (Senasp/MJ) has announced security measures for Sunday’s final match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup match.
It said it would double the number of National Public Security Force troops on duty in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the final match.
The ministry, which is charged with troops deployment, said this was part of the integrated operational plan by the Brazilian ministries of Justice and Defence for states hosting World Cup matches.
Teams constituted by the National Public Security Force are also on standby in Brazil’s capital, Brasília, for prompt deployment to Rio de Janeiro if necessary.
The troops are to patrol a number of roads in Rio de Janeiro.
These include Linha Amarela and Linha Vermelha, Lagoa da Barra highway, Niemeyer Avenue, Paulo de Frontin bypass, Rebouças Tunnel and Francisco Bicalho Avenue.
Public security initiatives are also planned for subway stations in co-ordination with the Brazilian Federal Highway Police.
Stations to be patrolled include Praça Cardeal Arcoverde, Siqueira Campos, Cantagalo, Central do Brasil, Copacabana, Saens Peña, São Francisco Xavier, Carioca and Cidade Nova.
Co-ordinator of the security operations in Rio de Janeiro, Lt. Col. Américo Gaia, said security efforts are planned to focus mostly on ostensible policing activities at strategic points in the city.
He said, “Actions were also planned under the Pacificadora II (Pacifier II) Operation, including all-round policing of the Santo Amaro community.
“This is in addition to social inclusion activities and occupational practices offered by 108 firefighters from the National Public Security Forces.”
He added that outside of Rio de Janeiro, the National Public Security Force would also reinforce preventive security operations in Natal (Rio Grande do Norte) and Cuiabá (Mato Grosso).
He said, “In addition to direct support in these three state capitals, the National Public Security troops will operate in partnership with the Brazilian Federal Highway Police in six states.
“The states are Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro.”

Chibok girls: Jonathan, not the problem, says Abati

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, has said it is unfair for anybody to see President Goodluck Jonathan as the problem in the case of  the over 200 schoolgirls abducted in Chibok, Borno State about three months ago.
He said the attempt to ignore the issues and paint Jonathan as the problem had resulted in  deliberate mischief fueled by ignorance and sponsored propaganda.
Abati made his position known in an opinion titled ‘Nigeria’s offensive against Boko Haram Charges of a do-nothing strategy are misconceived’ published by Washington Times.
Abati however admitted that the concern that had been expressed over the abduction of the girlswas legitimate and understandable.
The presidential spokesman said the most popular misconception was  the notion that the Jonathan administration had consciously adopted a “do-nothing” strategy, and that the government only responded and considered international partnership necessary after pressure was mounted on it to do something.
He recalled that the Boko Haram threat dated back to 2002 and had become a bigger menace, and a full-scale terrorist movement by the time Jonathan assumed office in 2010.
He said the sect’s elements and their international allies had carved out enclaves in the northeast of the country by hosting their flags and threatening to destabilise the government and impose an Islamic state.
During the past four years, Abati said Jonathan had taken proactive steps to combat terrorism, including military, political and social actions.

In the aftermath of the failed suicide bombing attempt on a military facility by a female terrorist who blew herself up in Gombe recently, troops have arrested three suspected female terrorists who have been secretly recruiting ladies into the female wing of the terrorists group. The suspects, Hafsat Usman Bako, Zainab Idris and Aisha Abubakar were intercepted while travelling to Madagali from where they were to transit to the forest to reunite with their cohorts.
Investigations revealed that the suspects, led by Hafsat Bako, have the mission to recruit members into the female wing as well as conduct espionage for the group. Hafsat’s link with the terrorists group had earlier been a subject of investigation in 2012, when security agents on a manhunt for one Usman Bako, her husband who was identified as a terrorist, stormed their residence in Jimeta.  This resulted in the discovery of an AK 47 rifle and 2 loaded magazines.   Though Usman Bako later died in an encounter with troops in Sokoto where he had relocated to continue his terrorist activities, Hafsat continued with the terror group specializing in surreptitious recruitment of members into their fold.
The arrested trio suspects were luring ladies especially widows and young girls by enticing them with male suitors who are mainly members of their terror group for marriage. Before their arrest, they were on a mission to take additional briefing from the leadership of the terror group.
The trio has been operating together as members of the intelligence team of the group.   Their arrest has yielded information still being verified by security agencies.
