South Africa, claims Nigeria barter dead bodies for arms

TB Joshua

The South African Government may have bartered the bodies of 84 South Africans, who died in a building collapse in Lagos, for arms with Nigeria, a South African newspaper, Mail and Guardian, has reported.

The paper said it saw two letters written by a Minister in the South African Presidency, Jeff Radebe, in which he promised to assist Nigeria ensure that an arms sale worth $9.3m (about R100-million), which had been blocked by South Africa, would proceed.

The Mail & Guardian reported that Radebe wrote to JP “Torie” Pretorius of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (the Hawks), and Dumisani Dladla, the head of the national conventional arms control committee secretariat, seeking to assist the Nigerian government to get the weapons.

Nigeria wanted the arms, including helicopters and ammunition, to fight against the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram.

In October, the Asset Forfeiture Unit seized $5.7m that had been wired to Standard Bank in South Africa. Three weeks before that, $9.3m in cash was confiscated after being brought into the country via Lanseria Airport, north of Johannesburg, in three suitcases, by a delegation said to represent the Nigerian government.

In both instances, the money was apparently confiscated as the transactions it was to be used for were illegal.

In his letters, Radebe, the chairperson of the arms control committee, said it had come to the committee’s attention that the failed attempt on September 5 to pay an arms dealer in South Africa “was, in fact, a legitimate requirement from the government of Nigeria.”

“Although the required administrative processes were not adhered to at the time, the government of South Africa deems it a bona fide error,” Radebe said in his letters to Dladla and Pretorius.

The minister’s key request to Dladla was for him to “liaise” with Pretorius and to “obtain all relevant information in order to assist the parties involved to apply for the necessary authorisations in compliance with the National Conventional Arms Control Amendment Act (no 73 of 2008).

“Upon receipt of the required permit applications, the national conventional arms control committee will favourably consider ex-post facto approval thereof,” Radebe wrote.

The committee is a cabinet body tasked with regulating the sale of arms to legitimate governments and its mandate includes ensuring South Africa does not sell weapons that are used to violate human rights.

The M&G however noted that Radebe found it difficult to sell his plan to other South African authorities as other law enforcement agencies looking into the arms money are pressing on with their investigations, and Radebe’s colleagues in the Cabinet are said to be less than impressed.

The Hawks spokesperson, Captain Paul Ramaloko, said that the investigation was continuing and that his investigators knew nothing about Radebe’s request for charges to be withdrawn.

But Ramaloko admitted that the Hawks were part of the priority crime directorate, whose head, Pretorius, had received the request from Radebe.

Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, who also serves on the committee, referred the M&G‘s questions to Radebe.

Another Cabinet minister and arms committee member, said Radebe unilaterally wrote the letters to Dladla and Pretorius without consulting fellow committee members and only sought their blessing much later.

A government official said Radebe’s colleagues were accusing him of single-handedly legitimising the Nigerian arms procurement transaction.

But Radebe, through his spokesperson, Vanessa du Toit, said he was surprised by claims that three committee members had distanced themselves from the decision to help Nigeria to legitimise the arms deal because “this matter was discussed and approved at the October 30 2014 NCACC meeting.”

The letters Radebe wrote to Dladla and Pretorius are dated October 6, three weeks before the date the minister said the committee met and gave him the go-ahead.

The South African Government in a swift reaction, described the report as rubbish, stressing that there was no barter with Nigeria on the arms deal.

SA Government spokesperson, Phumla Williams, debunked the story on Friday, in a statement, saying the report held no water.

William said, “Government places it on record that no form of bartering with Nigeria was conducted during the repatriation process.

The Director of Communication Division, Nigerian Foreign Affairs, Ahmedu Ogbole-Ode, could not be reached for comments on Friday as he did not respond to calls to his phone.

Also our correspondents could not get the Director in charge of Press at the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Sheikh Maikai, to comment on the matter as the calls to his mobile telephone line indicated that it was either switched off or in an area outside network coverage.

But a source at an office strategic to the operations of the Federal Government said that the claim that the Federal Government had forfeited the $15m involved in the botched arms deal with South Africa for the corpses of South Africans who died in the Synagogue building collapse was untrue.

The source said that there was no link whatsoever between the synagogue tragedy and the funds involved in the arms deal.

Scarcity of men sends fear to Nigerian Ladies.

news

The recent alarm raised by the Catholic Women Organisation that husbands would become scarce in Nigeria in 2023 may just be right as NEWS MEN confirm that many Nigerian spinsters are currently witnessing the no-husband syndrome.

Within the last few weeks, some of the ladies who spoke with our correspondent reported serious apprehension, pressure and a total lack of peace as the consequence of their inability to get married.

One of the ladies, who preferred to be simply called Titi said she had taken the issue of marriage as a do-or-die affair due to “internal pressure” but that as much as she had tried, frustration had often been the result.

At 37, the businesswoman who sells clothes in Ikeja, the Lagos State capital in western Nigeria, told NEWS MEN  that she is not finding life easy.

“What is happiness without a man in a woman’s life?”she asked our correspondent during a chat on Badoo, a relationship site on the internet.

She had dated several men with some promising marriage, but without fulfilling the promise.

“You can’t imagine that in the last three years, I have dated about eight men, but the relationship was often short-lived simply because I ask for their commitment.........................read more here

Eduok Has Two Dates Of Birth-Siasia confirms

emem eduok dolphins

The controversy beclouding Eduok’s age has been cleared by the U-23 Eagles head coach

U-23 Eagles head coach Samson Siasia has said he expects Dolphins and the Nigeria league to clear the age discrepancies of star striker Emem Eduok.

He further disclosed that once the issue is sorted out, the player is welcome back to the team to fight for a place.

Clarifying his position on the player, Siasia said: “The player came and never trained with the team as he said he was down with injury, and sought for permission to go and get himself properly treated before he returned, a request which I granted as I want the best from my players.”

Speaking further, the coach said he invited Eduok based on the fact that he knows the player was part of the team at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup and is aware that he is under the age.

“But when his name was sent to the League Management Company for clarification like we did

with the names of all the players invited from the Premier League, we noticed that his date of birth in his license sent to the LMC showed him to be 23 years of age, so the problem is between his club and the LMC, which I think should be sorted out in the interest of the player.”

According to Siasia he needs all the best players the country could offer, that is why they embarked on an open screening exercise to unearth any good player, so he does not see how they would be shutting out a particular player who has shown to be one of the best this season.

Meanwhile, Siasia has said that there is no going back on a Friday closing date for the

screening of all players from the local scene.

He said due to the short time available for the technical crew, they need to concentrate on the foreign-based players expected to start arriving the camp of the team from Saturday 6th December, as they will be having their screening from Monday 8th, December at the FIFA Goal Project, Abuja.

TAM DAVID-WEST Buhari and the politics of religion

To match Interview NIGERIA-BUHARI/

Every Nigerian to the last person agrees that the greatest impediment to our quest for robust national growth and development (economic or political) as well as needed progress is bad leadership. The main existential ingredients of which are: Corruption, lack of integrity, lack of principle, indiscipline, unreliability, visionlessness, and power intoxication.

Furthermore, all these undesirables are even compounded with arrogance of power manifest in reckless and careless impunity in exercising power, with the power elite or leadership being deluded into baselessly believing in its invincibility. The great Chinua Achebe in his famous work, “The Trouble With Nigeria” was unequivocal in identifying bad leadership as central to all our national problems.

Things seem not to have changed over time. Writer (or analyst) after writer still see bad leadership as our major problem. For instance, one of our leading writers, Steve Nwosu, ‘celebrated’ our 54th year independence anniversary with his beautiful, “At 54, leadership remains our key challenge” (Daily SUN October, 01, 2014 back page).

Chiedu Uche Okoye; in a similar vein also wrote “Nigeria at 54: The Journey So Far.” (Daily SUN October 01, 2014 page 21). He submitted (and I totally go along): “Nigeria has the potential to become an economically and technologically advanced country, but inept and corrupt political leadership stands on our way to development…our leaders perceive leadership as an opportunity to amass wealth by corrupt means.”

Corruption, that ugly monster; militating against our national growth, development and progress has become such an integral part of our national ethos that one of Nigeria’s most distinguished sons, Alhaji Shehu Musa, scholar, intellectual and administrator (he was once Secretary to the Federal Government and Head of Service) bemoaned: “In Nigeria, it is not just that officials are corrupt, but that corruption is official. APC’s Buhari To Win 2015 Presidential Election

Tensions accompanying the impending 2015 presidential election in Nigeria are building up. Nigerians have formed strong opinions about each party and their candidates. guest writer Abdulbaqi Aliyu Jari praises one of the APC’s aspirants, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.), and explains why the latter is the most suitable person to rule Nigeria. He tries to convince his fellow compatriots to rise above religious and/or geopolitical sentiments.

Muhammadu Buhari

“I would like to, in advance, congratulate General Muhammadu Buhari GCFR (rtd.) for his imminent victory in the APC primaries. Also, for his subsequent win in the presidential election in 2015. Among all the contenders in the APC, not to mention the ruling PDP, or any other parties, there is nobody who is as competent as Buhari to lead Nigeria. I’ve promised God, myself and Nigeria to be truthful, loyal and honest. I promised not to be a sectional  bigot, or tribal chauvinist. I promised to look for a good candidate to vote for, and urge others to vote for him. Although I am a satirist, I am not a Buhari narcissist, but, rather, a truth seeker. Angelina Jolie In Scary Car Crash When Vehicle Lost Control On Wet Pavement

Angelina Jolie was in a rather scary car accident on Sunday, when two tires on the vehicle she was traveling in exploded after the car skidded on the wet road and hit a curb.

Eyewitnesses said the car slammed into the curb at a significant speed, but thankfully no one was badly injured.

Angelina was being chauffeured back to her Los Angeles home after the screening of “Unbroken”, a movie she directed.

After the screening at the Writers’ Guild Theater in Beverly Hills, the black SUV she was riding in “took off rather quickly” and skidded on the wet road and struck the curb.

An eyewitness revealed, “The car slammed into the curb at a significant speed. Angelina must have wondered if they hit another car. It was pretty bad — the tire exploded and it’s amazing nothing worse happened to the car. I wouldn’t be surprised if she has whiplash.”

Jolie reportedly did not receive medical attention at the scene and was picked up by another driver in a second hired car shortly after the accident.

Police were called to report that Angelina’s camp was being harassed by the paparazzi.  Maybe that is what caused the driver of the vehicle to lose control?

Prior to the crash, Jolie walked the red carpet prior to the screening of her new film, which is due out on Christmas day.

The film is based on the best-selling book “Unbroken” written by Laura Hillenbrad.

The movie chronicles the life of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner who was captured by Japanese forces during World War II and spent two years as a prisoner of war.

Angelina and Brad Pitt’s children have seen the movie and think Zamperini, who died at the age of 97 last July, was a hero.

She said, “This man’s life is about forgiveness and unity. My own children have watched it and they walked out of it and thought he was a hero.”

Stephanie Okereke’s Fans Blast Her Brother

stttettee

Recently, it was reported that popular actress, Stephanie Okereke’s brother, Daniel, was arrested for allegedly ra*ping a University of Lagos student identified simply as Arinola.

Shortly after, the actress released a press statement condemning the action and applauded the alleged victim for speaking out. The dark-skinned actress also said that the law should take its full course.

However, while her fans admired her courage and stance on the matter, they blasted her brother for dragging their family name through the mud.

An online commentator, Ada Onyema, suggested a punishment she felt best fits the alleged crime.

She said, “I agree with her. The so-called ra*pist is a grown man, not Stephanie’s child or nephew. He should be responsible for his actions! Bloody ra*pist, they need to plug a ring boiler to his man-hood and let it boil.”

Linda Uche also aired her opinion online while commending the actress for being just.

“Stephanie, keep advocating for women and the Lord will surely crown your efforts. As for that ra*pist, the law will castrate him and he will rot in jail,” she said.

Chi Exotic said that he should face the consequence of his action. “He should be made to face the consequence of his inhuman actions regardless of the calibre of person he is. r*pe is ra*pe,” she said.

An anonymous commentator said that Daniel should be ashamed of himself for dragging the family’s name through the mud.

“This guy should be ashamed of himself. Your sister is there working hard and you are busy ra*ping girls. It is either po*rn addiction, plain stinginess or a psychological disorder. I still wonder why a guy like you will ra*pe. You can get consensual se*x anytime, ra*pe is a no no. Let him face the wrath of the law. It’s so annoying,” the commentator said.

Obama Administration Quietly Disarming Border Patrol Agents

border patrol

Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) has removed almost half of the weapons from our Border Patrol Agents.

Immigration and Border Patrol

I have NEVER believed in coincidence.  As the president has made it clear he will utilize his pen, outside of the authority he is vested by the U.S. Constitution, to grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens, ICE, and Agency under the Department of Homeland Security, has been disarming our Border Patrol Agents.

Agents have had their personal weapons, an M4 Carbine, removed, supposedly for safety concerns.  Agents are now forced to share weapons between multiple agents.

M4 Carbine

The M4 is a variant of the M16 fully automatic combat rifle.  The M4 is shorter, with a 16″ versus 20″ barrel, lighter and usually fitted with a collapsible stock.  The M4 can operate in semi-auto mode, firing once for each pull of the trigger, or can be selected to fire a 3 round burst when the trigger is pulled.  For this reason, the M4 is considered a fully automatic rifle.

The AR15 is a civilian variant of the military M16 and M4 rifle.  Similar in every, with one very important difference.  Civilian AR15s are NOT fully automatic.  AR15s can only fire in semi-automatic mode.

The M16, M4 and AR15 rifles comprise the moist widely produced and sold rifles in America.  This author is intimately familiar with the M16-A1 having carried one in the Marine Corps, and the civilian AR15 having owned multiple copies.

Safety Concern?

As the most widely sold and owned rifle in America, if there were a safety concern or recall, it would be well known.  The internet would be awash with warnings.

Yet, Customs officials claim the large number of M4s being taken from Border Patrol agents is because the weapons were found to be unserviceable and posed safety concerns.

Representative Steve King (R, Iowa) isn’t accepting that explanation.  King said,

“There’s no more reliable weapon in the world.”

“Any agency like the Department of Homeland Security that has bought millions of rounds of ammunition over the past few years could certainly afford to replace with new serviceable M4s all the weapons they are for testing.”

“This sounds to me like a ruse to start to take the weapons out of the hands of the Border Patrol.”

Congressman King said that if there were legitimate concerns about the safety and serviceability of the M4s,

“I would know about it by now.  As far as I know, there’s nothing out there about the operability of the M4.”

“If there were any problem with them as far as safety was concerned, it would be all over the Internet.  And it’s the exact opposite; the weapon is so reliable.”

King said DHS must be held accountable.

“I don’t get it. How does DHS go from ‘Fast and Furious’ to disarming the Border Patrol?”

“The Mexican drug cartels are shooting at the Border Patrol with 50-caliber across the Rio Grande.  I’m concerned the Border Patrol does not have enough protection going out with just M4s.”

Agenda?

Some have questioned past Border Patrol actions and use of force.  Clearly, maintaining Border Security is a difficult and dangerous task.  The Administration has put out the doormat for immigrants with questionable guidelines.  In recent months Border Patrol agents have been working more as nannies and nursemaids, rather than law enforcement.

While Border Agents have been seeking command guidance on ever changing procedures, Mexican military and drug cartels continue to breach our border with impunity.  Human and drug smuggling through American border towns have brought local Sheriff Departments into the fray as border crime increases.

If the president issues an executive order of amnesty, or something similar, the flood of illegal immigrants, along with possible terrorists,  across the southern border will be unstoppable.  Representative King recognizes this.  He expressed a determination to find out exactly why DHS was taking the action now.  Wanting answers, King said,

“Think of the Marine Corps if the troops had to share a weapon.  You sleep with your weapon, and you live with your weapon. You tear down your weapon, clean it and put it back together again until you can do it blindfolded. So what U.S. Customs and Border Protection is doing is like saying to a cowboy that you don’t get your own horse.”

“It would be very disturbing to me to know I had to go out and put my life on the line, but I had to check somebody else’s weapon out of the gun cabinet in the pool.”

“If you disarm the Border Patrol in preparation for issuing an executive edict of unconstitutional amnesty, that starts a flood of illegal immigrants into the United States, and we can’t protect our borders.”

And THAT may be exactly what President Obama and his administration want to occur.

120 lawmaker sign Jonathan’s impeachment notice

In Abuja-more than 120 lawmakers have  appended their signatures for the impeachment of President Goodluck, immediately House reconvenes in December.

Mohammed Zakari, chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, while reacting on it said “the notice of impeachment was not on the order paper today but I’m not foreclosing that some other things took place.”

On his part, Leo Ogor, deputy House Leader who urged members to jettison such plans, argued that the notice of impeachment is inconsequential, as the President had no hand in what transpired at the National Assembly.

“The President is unaware so bringing it (impeachment) up is going to be defeated. The President has done no wrong, impeachment should not even be part of the issue,” he pleaded.

Similar agitation by aggrieved lawmakers to move for impeachment of Emeka Ihedioha, deputy Speaker during the brief closed door session, was however averted by the Speaker who called for calmness.

The lawmakers  that appended their signatures are of the APC extraction.

Nig First Lady accused of donating expired rice to Bayelsa women

fake-rice-300x194

News coming from Yenogoa, the Bayelsa State capital says that the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan distributed expired rice to Bayelsa women.

Dame Jonathan had visited the state on Thursday to distribute empowerment materials to women. The exercise caused a heavy traffic gridlock, paralyzing social and commercial activities on the Yenagoa-Mbiama Road.

Women in the state, who were gathered at the Samson Siasia Stadium at Ovom, Yenagoa received gifts and cheques from the First Lady, who urged them to vote en-masse for her husband, Goodluck Jonathan.

However, news reports alleged that the rice distributed by the First Lady were expired ones.

According to Sahara Reporters, “the MDGs, a United Nations benchmark which is aimed at eradicating extreme poverty and hunger for all citizens, became the basis for a political campaign ground for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN), a political group affiliated with President Jonathan’s re-election.”

Several bags of rice repackaged in bags branded with Mr. Jonathan’s photos, sewing machines, hair dryers, and tricycles also known as “Keke NAPEP” were distributed to some at the rally.

A DailyPost source in Yenogoa, responding to enquiries, said she heard the rumour but cannot confirm if Dame Jonathan actually distributed rice or whether the rice were expired. She added that what she is sure the First Lady gave out were tricycles.

ACN tournament : Equatorial Guinea will replace Morocco as hosts of 2015 finals

africa-cup-of-nations-trophy-africa-cup-trophy_3228968

The Confederation of African Football has announced Equatorial Guinea will replace Morocco as the hosts of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015.

Morocco requested the tournament be postponed because of fears about the Ebola outbreak which has so far claimed the lives of 5,000 people, mainly in West Africa.

The completion will take place in January and February next year without Morocco.

Equatorial Guinea hosted the 2012 finals with neighbours Gabon but will take on the 16-team tournament on their own this time.

Morocco wanted the tournament postponed over fears of a spread of the deadly virus but CAF refused and on Tuesday stripped the north African country of the hosting rights.

The new hosts will be able to play in the tournament, despite being disqualified from the preliminaries by CAF for fielding an ineligible player.

CAF said in a statement: “Following fraternal and fruitful discussions, the head of state of Equatorial Guinea has agreed to host the tournament from January 17 to February 8, 2015.

“The national team of Equatorial Guinea qualify for the final tournament as host country.”

The matches will take place in four venues and the draw for the finals will take place on December 3 in the country’s capital, Malabo.

“I am happy with the level of support my aspiration has received anywhere we go. The people appreciate the liberation work we have done so far and the development programmes we have set out to achieve when we are eventually elected to take over the Brick House.”

The former Minister of State for Education, Barrister Wike urged the Rivers people to continue to disregard the agitations of moles planted by a defeated opposition party in the state.

“All threats by these sponsored aspirants cannot changed anything. We will win the election very well and no anarchy will befall Rivers state. Those aspirants threatening violence in Abuja are wasting their time

Also speaking, member representing Abua Odual/Ahaoda East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mrss Betty Apiafi said while other aspirants have presence only on the pages of newspapers, Wike has built a relationship with all sections of the state.

Ken Warriboko, PDP chairman of Abua-Odual LGA said that the party delegates and members have resolved to vote for Barrister Wike at the governorship primary on December 8 and the general election.

PDP leader in Obua/Odual LGA and Executive Director, Finance of NDDC, Dr Henry Ogiri said that his support for Barrister Wike stems from the fact that Wike represents peace, development and growth of Rivers State.

He said that only Wike has the capacity to recover the governorship mandate stolen by the APC, pointing out that Wike made it possible for President Jonathan and his wife to have their integrity to be preserved in the state.

Highpoint of the occasion was the launching of the integrated empowerment scheme for Abua/Odual LGA.

Nigeria military helicopter crashes in restive northeast

It was the second Nigerian military helicopter to go down this week in Yola, in Adamawa State, after another made a forced landing shortly after takeoff.

A Nigerian military helicopter crashed and exploded on Thursday in the northeast region of the country where it is battling Boko Haram insurgents, witnesses and a security source told news men.

The security source in the capital Abuja, said there were some casualties but declined to give further details saying the Nigerian defence ministry would issue a statement later. The incident occurred, however, in an area where there were no immediate reports of combat or of Boko Haram activity.

Boko Haram stepped up attacks since the government announced a purported ceasefire last month which was later rejected by the group’s leader.

It was the second Nigerian military helicopter to go down this week in Yola, in Adamawa State, after another, according to the defence ministry, made a forced landing shortly after takeoff.

Hey Ibrahim Ali a resident of Hayin Kada village near Yola, told Reuters they saw the helicopter hovering.

“Then later, we heard the sound of the helicopter suddenly changed, it started going down and then we heard a loud sound, followed by several explosions. So we started running into the bush,” Ali said by telephone.

He said villagers went to the crash site on Friday morning and it was cordoned off by security officials.

The helicopter may have been heading for a military operation further north from Yola where the military were fighting Boko Haram. The army retook control of the towns of Mubi and Maiha from the insurgents with the help of local hunters and civilian vigilantes on Thursday.

But there was still signs of rebel activity near this area.

About 30 Boko Haram militants stormed the village of Chibok, in Borno State, where the group abducted some 200 schoolgirls seven months ago, raising international outcry. Chibok has been target of a number of attacks since the abductions.

“The insurgents arrived at about 5pm on Thursday, shooting sporadically, forcing people to flee into the bush,” a villager who fled told news men by telephone, adding that many villagers may have been killed.

He said the militants burnt several houses and were moving towards neighbouring Damboa.

Sewol trial: Ferry captain sentenced to 36 years in jail

rp_news_stock1-150x150.jpg

The captain of the South Korean ferry which sank in April has been found guilty of gross negligence and sentenced to 36 years in prison.

The Sewol ferry was carrying 476 people when it went down. More than 300 died, most of them school students.

Lee Joon-seok was among 15 crew members on trial over the sinking, one of South Korea’s worst maritime disasters.

Prosecutors charged him with homicide and called for the death penalty, but judges acquitted him on that charge.

Lee is in his late 60s, and he accepted in court that he would spend the rest of his days in jail, according to the BBC’s Steve Evans in Gwangju.

The judges said that he was clearly not the only person responsible for the tragedy and they accepted that his negligence did not amount to an intent to kill.

The disaster was blamed on a combination of illegal redesigns, the overloading of cargo and the inexperience of the crew member steering the vessel.

Crew members did not secure cargo which moved when the vessel took a tight corner, toppling the ferry, and Lee was filmed leaving the sinking ship while many passengers remained inside.

During the trial, Lee apologised for abandoning them.

Clerics-Boko Haram slaughters Christians, burns churches in Adamawa

rp_news_stock1-150x150.jpg

Christian leaders in Adamawa State are worried that the Christians are being systematically eliminated in the areas occupied by Boko Haram fighters in the state.

The Christian leaders, in a communiqué issued at the end of a one day meeting held at Bishop Shehaan Pastoral Centre in Yola, the state capital, on Tuesday, expressed displeasure with the recent takeover of six local government areas of Madagali, Michika, Mubi North, Mubi South and parts of Hong by the Islamic extremists.

In the communiqué, which was read by the Archbishop of the LCCN, Most Rev. Dr. Nemuel Babba, the leaders alleged that from reports they had gathered from people in the occupied territories,  the militants slaughtered Christian parents an

brothers in the presence of their wives and children.

They equally said the violent Islamic sect had destroyed existing churches in the areas.

The communiqué read, “We reject in strong terms insinuations from certain quarters that the insurgents are mere bunch of trigger-happy miscreants, whose intentions are to settle certain scores with the government, owing to the towering revelations of attacks mostly targeted at Christians.”

Boko Haram suicide bomber kills 47 schoolchildren

news_stock

A   teenage   suicide bomber on Monday killed 47 schoolchildren and three teachers on   the assembly ground of the Government Comprehensive School in Potiskum, Yobe State.

At least 98 other students and teachers were   seriously injured in the incident which occurred hours after Northern governors called on President Goodluck Jonathan “to declare a total war and eliminate Boko Haram in our midst before the 2015 elections.”

Jonathan, who will on Tuesday(today) formally declare his intention to seek a re-election in 2015,     had shortly after the news of the schoolchildren’s killing, assured Nigerians that those behind the act would be apprehended.

Although no group has claimed responsibility for the Monday attack, residents believe that the bomber must be a member of Boko Haram.

A bomber had last week attacked a procession of Shiite movement in the town, killing   over 30 persons.

Our correspondents gathered that the teenager bomber beat the school’s security   and joined the students and teachers who were about to have their prayer before detonating explosives strewn to his body at about 7.45am.

An eyewitness who did not want his name in print said that the bodies of “about   50, including three teachers, that died due to the attack were scattered on the assembly ground.

Tambuwal no longer entitled to security details – Adoke,Suleiman Abba

The AGF, Mr. Mohammed Adoke, and the IGP Mr. Suleiman Abba, have maintained their position  that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, is no longer qualified  to have  security details.

They argued that Tambuwal had ceased to be a member of the House and its Speaker having defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, which in 2011 sponsored his election into the House of Representatives, to the All Progressives Congress.

They maintained that Tambuwal had now become an ordinary citizen, who was no longer entitled to the privileges attached to the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

These are the contentions canvassed by both the Inspector-General of Police and Adoke in a joint counter-affidavit which they filed before Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in response to the suit by Tambuwal and the APC.

The IGP and the AGF are the 5th and 7th defendants in the suit respectively.

The plaintiffs filed the suit to challenge the withdrawal of his security details, alleged threat by the PDP to declare his seat vacant and remove him as Speaker.

The lawyer, who represented the IGP and the AGF, Ade Okeaya-Inneh (SAN), argued that the police authorities could not be accused of breaching the Constitution by withdrawing Tambuwal’s security details, since he (Tambuwal) had lost his seat as House member and Speaker.

The counter affidavit which was deposed to on behalf of the AGF and IGP by one of their lawyers, Nnamdi Ekwem, read in part, “The 1st plaintiff (Tambuwal) vacated his seat in the House of Representatives as a member of that House, when he became a member of the 2nd plaintiff (All Progressives Congress) in October 2014, having been elected in 2011 on the platform of the 1st defendant (PDP).

“The seat of the 1st plaintiff in the House of Representatives became automatically vacant by virtue of his defection to the 2nd plaintiff (APC) and consequently ceased to be the Speaker of the 3rd defendant (the House of Representatives).

“The first plaintiff is not constitutionally entitled to security details and as such, the 5th defendant did not contravene any law by its withdrawal of the 1st plaintiff’s security details. The withdrawal of the security details of the 1st plaintiff was necessitated by the fact the he had vacated his office as a member of the House of Representatives and consequently ceased to be the Speaker of the 3rd defendant.

“The 1st plaintiff is no longer a member of the House of Representatives and as such not entitled to any right or privilege attached to the office of the Speaker of the 3rd defendant. That, the 1st plaintiff, as an ordinary citizen of Nigeria, was not exposed to any danger of bodily harm because of the withdrawal of his security details.”

Toure: Man. City midfielder criticises online abusers

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure says the abuse he has been subjected to on social media is “a disgrace”.

Police are investigating claims that Toure was racially abused on Twitter, only hours after he reactivated his account following a five-month absence.

“For me it’s a disgrace to be honest,” Toure, 31, told BBC Sport. “We need to do something to try to tell people those kinds of behaviour have to stop.

“I want those people to understand what they’re doing is wrong.”

Anti-discrimination group Kick It Out  said it had “received complaints” about two tweets of a “racist nature” and had informed the police on Monday.

Kick it Out said Toure had been back on Twitter “for a matter of hours” when he “received abuse of an appalling nature”.

Toure was also the target of racist abuse last season when City beat CSKA Moscow in Russia.

“To have such aggression in sport, I can’t understand that. That’s why I’ve been trying to fight it,” added Toure.

“Football doesn’t have a colour. We’re just people from all over the world trying to enjoy the game.

“I never see this in rugby, I never see that in tennis or anything else, I don’t know where it’s coming from.”

Toure fears failure to stamp out online abuse will force other footballers to steer clear of social media.

“For me it’s OK because I have experience but for young lads, who will maybe go on Twitter and find that. First they’ll be afraid, second they’ll close their account,” he said.

Asked if he found the abuse hurtful, Toure said: “To be honest with you no, because I’ve been attacked like that for many years. [But] I will never stop telling them they are wrong and have to change.”

Iraqis fleeing attacks by ISIL militants are suffering amid heavy rains and low temperatures, says UN

The United Nations is desperately  seeking  for assistance as they  appeal for $173 million to help more than one million displaced Iraqis as they face the onset of winter.

Laerke said: “… displaced people are being hit by heavy rains, strong winds and storms and low temperatures especially in the mountainous areas of the Kurdistan region of Iraq.”

“To respond their needs, the UN in Iraq is today calling for $1.73 million to help more than 1.2 million people in desperate need of assistance over winter,” he added.

Laerke said about 1.1 million children would require additional care during winter and shelter, food, heating and health services were needed immediately.

Slain Gazan found 78 days after Israeli onslaught

Zahdi Abul-Rous went missing in August during the recent Israeli onslaught on the blockaded Palestinian enclave, which left hundreds dead and thousands injured.

Civil defense workers on Monday found the body of a Palestinian man under the rubble of a Gaza Strip mosque destroyed by an Israeli airstrike 78 days ago, medial sources have said.

Zahdi Abul-Rous went missing in August during the recent Israeli onslaught on the blockaded Palestinian enclave, which left hundreds dead and thousands injured.

Over two months later, his body was found under the rubble of the destroyed Qassam Mosque in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip as civil defense workers were removing the debris.

The body was badly decomposed, the sources added.

For 51 days this summer, Israel pounded the Gaza Strip – by air, land and sea – with the stated aim of ending rocket fire from the coastal enclave.

More than 2,160 Gazans, mostly civilians, were killed – and 11,000 injured – during seven weeks of unrelenting Israeli attacks in July and August.

The Israeli offensive finally ended on August 26 with the announcement of an indefinite cease-fire agreement.

Brokered in Egypt, the truce calls for reopening Gaza’s border crossings with Israel, which, if implemented, would effectively end the latter’s years-long blockade of the embattled territory.

On Sunday, Israel closed the Kerem Shalom and Erez crossings, the latter of which is used for the movement of persons between blockaded Gaza and the occupied West Bank

The Kerem Shalom border crossing, the Gaza Strip’s only functioning commercial terminal, has been kept closed for the second consecutive day by the Israeli authorities, with only limited amounts of petroleum products allowed into the blockaded enclave.

“Israel kept the Kerem Shalom crossing closed for the second consecutive day, but allowed in limited amounts of gasoline, diesel, cooking gas, and fuel needed to run the Gaza Strip’s only functioning power station,” Raed Fattouh, a liaison officer at the crossing, told Anadolu Agency.

Sergio Aguero has scored five goals in six Premier League games against Manchester United

  • Man City recors first win in four games

  • United’s Smalling sent off in first half

  • Aguero scores 11th goal in 12 league games

  • Team badge of Manchester CityTeam badge of Manchester United

Manchester City won a chaotic derby at Etihad Stadium as Sergio Aguero’s second-half strike gave the Premier League champions victory over Manchester United.

Aguero’s 10th Premier League goal of the season finally breached a depleted United defence after Chris Smalling had been sent off in the first half and Marcos Rojo taken off on a stretcher after the break with shoulder damage.

It also brought a shaft of light to a disappointing week that had seen manager Manuel Pellegrini’s side lose at West Ham in the league then see their Capital One Cup defence ended at home by Newcastle.

In a game that was played on the edge of ill-discipline and often strayed into it, Aguero’s goal will have felt like vindication to City and their fans, infuriated at seeing a succession of presentable penalty appeals rejected by referee Michael Oliver.

Most significantly, it kept leaders Chelsea in the champions’ sights, albeit with a six-point advantage and four ahead of second-placed Southampton.

This was a compelling derby, the first for new United manager Louis van Gaal, who saw his defence stripped bare and the attacking riches of Angel Di Maria, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney – returning from suspension – fail to fire.

The Dutchman will be furious at the unnecessary way in which Smalling was dismissed, while the hosts will be happy their mini-slump was ended by a sixth win in the last seven Manchester derbies in the Premier League.

Nerves and tempers were frayed towards the end as United mounted a recovery of sorts and while this was not the sort of display to have Jose Mourinho and Chelsea looking anxiously over their shoulders, victory was all that mattered to City after recent mishaps.

Former Wales international Robbie Savage:

“Manchester United are level on points with West Brom. Don’t get me wrong, I think Alan

Irvine is doing a great job there, but United have spent £150m on new players and that is unacceptable. When are we going to start asking serious questions of Louis van Gaal in press conferences because I haven’t heard it yet.”

Such was the combustible nature of the first half, with quality at a premium, that it was inevitable players from both sides would be running the risk of a red card.

Rooney harangued referee Oliver to demand a booking for Pablo Zabaleta while England keeper Joe Hart was right in the official’s face when Daley Blind kicked the ball away having already been booked.

Amid the mayhem, United keeper David de Gea demonstrated his growing stature with a superb reflex save from Jesus Navas before diving bravely at the feet of Aguero, both players collecting an injury in the process.

When the red card came, it was in the most irresponsible manner imaginable. Smalling had been needlessly booked for charging down Hart’s clearance then launched himself at James Milner in a manner that was only going to end one way.

The centre-half was studiously ignored by United’s management team as he made his way off, Michael Carrick replacing Adnan Januzaj as Van Gaal was forced into a defensive redesign.

Temperatures were rising on and off the pitch as referee Oliver refused to answer several home demands for penalties, particularly when Fellaini clashed with Aguero before half-time and again after the interval when he attempted to dart between the Belgian and Carrick in the area.

United’s defensive resources were further reduced when Rojo was taken off on a stretcher after damaging his shoulder diving into a challenge on Martin Demichelis. Teenager Paddy McNair came into a makeshift rearguard.

It was impossible to see the visitors keeping City out – and they did not. The breakthrough came after 62 minutes when Yaya Toure’s pass cleared space on the left flank for Gael Clichy, whose cross was met expertly by Aguero, pulling away from defenders to flash a powerful finish high past De Gea.

No Premier League team has had more players sent off than Manchester United in 2014 (5)

Navas struck a post as City tried to confirm their advantage but suddenly, against all odds, United became a threat as Hart saved from Van Persie and Di Maria, while Fellaini headed hopelessly wide from eight yards.

Five minutes of stoppage time had the nerves jangling around the Etihad, but City closed out a crucial win.

Okocha joins Delta gov race, promises private-sector approach PDP

rp_news_stock1-150x150.jpgA maritime expert and PDP governorship aspirant in Delta State, Mr. Peter Okocha, has declared that he would introduce the private-sector mentality into the business of governance.

He also promised to utilise the 13 per cent derivation fund to develop the oil-producing communities in Delta State.

A statement on Sunday by his Campaign Organisation said the business magnate made the promise at WADATA Plaza, National Secretariat PDP in Abuja, when he returned his Expression of Interest Form for the governorship race in Delta State.

He said, “It is my intention to introduce the private sector mentality into the business of governance. In fact, good corporate governance would be the driving force of my government. Civil servants must deliver efficient services and appropriately remunerated.

“Furthermore, if elected, I will use the 13 per cent derivation fund to develop the oil-producing areas of the state because the people in these areas suffer environmental degradation, untold health hazards as well as economic deprivation resulting from oil exploration activities.

“My government would be pan-Deltan. No part of the state would feel abandoned and I assuredly declare that it is my intention to build on the legacy of the present administration.”

Present at the event were leaders of various interest groups from Delta State among which were Delta State PDP Youth Solidarity Group, National Congress of Anioma Youths and the Delta State Multi-Ethnic Coalition.
