ISIS Calls Out New York for Attack

new york

Farah Mohamed Shirdon
A Canadian citizen, now fighting with ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, warns of a 'brilliant' attack planned for New York.
The ISIS member, Farah Shirdon, 21 years old (also known as Abu Usamah Somali), speaking with Shane Smith of VICE news, from Mosul via video chat told Smith,
"We'll sure be making attacks in New York soon [with Allah's permission]. A lot of brothers there are mobilizing right now [thanks to Allah]."
When asked by Smith what they are mobilizing for, Shirdon responded,
"Mobilizing for a brilliant attack, my friend."
Canadian Security Intelligence Services
Traveling to Iraq on a Canadian Passport, Shirdon left Canada to fight with ISIS. In a prior video Shirdon vows to 'wreak havoc on the United States and Canada' while he is seen burning his passport.
Shirdon told Smith officials from the Canadian Security Intelligence Services (CSIS) interviewed him days before he left on his quest for jihad. Referring to CSIS as 'imbeciles,' Shirdon says they missed the chance to stop him from enlisting.
"I can't believe how someone that has extremist terrorist ideologies was sitting in front of you and you didn't catch them. The next time they saw me, they saw me ripping up my passport."
ISIS Speaker or Boastful Peon?
It's unclear if Shirdon has specific knowledge or simply boasting, beating his chest, for the media. There's no evidence Shirdon speaks nor has any specific knowledge of ISIS plans.
According to Shirdon, referring to ISIS,
"We have thousands of prisoners from the West that we have that we will have to behead."
Not 1000s
US and British officials acknowledge ISIS is holding additional citizens as hostages. Following the beheadings of Americans James Foley and Steven Sotloff, ISIS released a video of British citizen David Haines beheading. As the video ends, the executioner places his hand on the head of British citizen Alan Henning sending a clear message: Henning is next.
The video beheadings have great propaganda value, as ISIS continues to recruit members from Europe and America. Via the internet, the beheading videos have shock value far outside of the Middle East where such barbaric actions are common.
Beheadings
In May, 2013, a Muslim attacked and beheaded a British soldier with a machete.  Earlier this month, 82 year old Palmira Silva, a widow and grandmother, was decapitated outside her house in an apparent frenzied assault by a 25-year-old man, and recent convert to Islam.
Thursday, another convert to Islam, attacked two women in Moore, Oklahoma, beheading 54 year old Colleen Huford before repeatedly stabbing 43 year old Traci Johnson.
Beheading is barbaric. Smith asked Shirdon, "Why are you cutting their heads off, what is the philosophy behind that?" Shirdon answered,
"Come to me, I will come to you. Attack one of us, we will attack one of you."
"   ……. only stop when they have beheaded all of the leaders of the West and have enslaved their children."
President Obama
Shirdon ended the interview with a message directed toPresident Obama,
"I swear you infidel, I swear to Almighty God, that we will fight you to the end."

Boko Haram are looting our armoury – military Defence Headquarters

news_stock

The Defence Headquarters has said that it was aware that members of the outlawed Islamist sect, Boko Haram, were in the habit of looting its armoury.

The military authorities stated that they were making efforts to secure all armouries in its various formations across the country.

Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, made the disclosure during his first real-time Twitter chat which held on Sunday night.

The army general was, however, not categorical about the grades of weapons just as he did not name the armouries that have so far been looted by the insurgents.

“We are taking measures to ensure that our armouries are secured. We agree and are aware Boko Haram has stolen arms,” Olukolade said while responding to an inquiry by one of the participants of the Twitter chat.

The Defence spokesman explained that the military high command frowned on the proliferation of arms, noting that inter-agency cooperation had recently been heightened to contain the menace.

According to Olukolade, the policing of Nigerian borders with other West African neighbours have been repositioned in view of the security threats posed by the Boko Haram insurgents.

“Interagency collaboration has been heightened; from all indications policing of our borders has increased. Our strategic information-sharing policy considers transparency, security, propriety and accuracy in reporting to the public,” he added.

Warning that the military would deal decisively with saboteurs among its officers and men engaged in the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North East, Olukolade said the service chiefs were “monitoring all personnel both in the frontline and rear”, adding that “suspicious people are being vetted.”

Dismissing the insinuation that top military commanders were feeding large on the entitlements of the rank and file of the armed forces, the military spokesman argued that the quality of food being provided for the officers and men at the battlefront are the same.

He claimed that the welfare package for the slain officers and men who die on the battlefield was attractive.

“The food they (officers and men) eat is within standards and best diet design as practicable. All eat the same food, be it officers or soldiers.

“By the way, there are two levels of insurance covering all soldiers and men involved in the anti-terror war. There is the Personnels’ Service Arm insurance, the Defence Headquarters Insurance package which is different from the gratuity, death benefits and children scholarships. On honour for slain soldiers, we do give due and befitting burials,” Olukolade said.

According to him, since Shekau has been killed by the military forces, the Armed Forces would remain focused by maintaining the tempo of “firepower to ensure that we sweep them (Boko Haram) off their nuisance hotspots.”

Insisting that the Defence Headquarters would not concede any portion of Nigeria to terrorists, Olukolade said the surveillance and air operations were ongoing with a view to exerting control and ensure minimum collateral damage.

Olukolade further said that the Nigerian Armed Forces were better armed, responsive and service oriented when placed in comparison with their Cameroonian counterparts.

“We welcome input from allies. It still remains our duty to get best results for our people. We are exchanging ideas and intelligence.

“We have a Nigerian-led Multinational Joint Task Force particularly on the Lake Chad Basin area. Cameroon is inactive in this.

“Any campaign to suggest that our Army is weaker than Boko Haram, Cameroon’s or any other force is a campaign against Nigeria.

“There is so much eagerness to discredit us and make us bow psychologically. I am working for my country. No denials.

“They are trying to pitch the soldiers against the leadership. Any military that loses leadership is doomed for the nation.

“Officers are paid to manage soldiers. Civilians can’t control them. Anarchy looms if authority loses grip.”

Olukolade added that there was no time frame to putting an end to the insurgency as terrorism is usually a long fight.

He, thereafter, warned the media against what he described as the undermining of structures.

“This is not the time to prove that the pen is mightier than the sword. Nigerian media should not undermine structures. We appeal to foreign and the local press to be circumspect and be consistent with democracy and public interests.

“We agree that there is such a need to review its (military) communication mechanism and we have engaged with various stakeholders to maintain robust counter-terrorist communications,” he said.

Learn from endorsement of Jonathan, PDP tells APC

A member of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Gordon Bezimo has asked the All Progressives Congress to take a cue from the PDP which has eliminated rancour by endorsing President Goodluck Jonathan.

Bezimo said this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja, on Tuesday.

He was reacting to the condemnation of the endorsement by the APC.

The BoT member who is also the chairman of the governing board of the National Youth Service Corps, also said he saw no reason why the decision to endorse the president became the business of the opposition party.

He said “They should make themselves busy with how they can get their own candidates. I can assure you that by the time they finish, they will understand the advantage of having a consensus candidate.

“Secondly, it is the practice in civilised climes that once you have a sitting President who is doing well, you do not subject him to party primaries, because the acrimonies and disagreements that follow primary processes tears a party apart.

“So if you can avoid it, you endorse the President to go for a second term. So, we are teaching the other parties what to do, although it would take them a long time to get presidency, but even if it is 60 years from now, if they happen to produce the President, they should do what we are doing.”

However, reacting to Bezimo’s suggestion, National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said while the practice of endorsement was democratic, there was nothing to emulate about the way the PDP went about endorsing the President.

He said “The price being paid for Mr. Jonathan’s endorsement by Nigeria is simply too heavy, considering that the PDP governors who spearheaded the endorsement have now secured perpetual immunity from prosecution by anti-graft bodies, including the EFCC and the ICPC; the automatic tickets for all first-term PDP Governors, whether or not they have performed, the automatic tickets for all PDP governors running for the Senate, as well as the free ride back to the Upper Chamber for Senate President David Mark.”

Mohammed also recalled that the fact that leading lights in the American Democratic Party endorsed President Barrack Obama did not prevent Senator Hilary Clinton from seeking the party’s nomination.

Earlier, while speaking about the just concluded National Conference, Bezimo who was a member said decisions reached at the conference were capable of taking Nigeria to the next level if implemented.

He listed some of the issues which were addressed to include: marginalization, state creation and resource allocation.

According to him, the implementation of the conference report has been broken into three with the President given assurance that he will take care of the part that requires executive action.

He also said the other two parts which require constitutional amendment and legislative action will be forwarded to the National Assembly for implementation.

Bezimo equally dismissed calls for the scrapping of the NYSC as myopic. He said the scheme has over the years provided the required platform for national integration.

Boko Haram destroys 500 houses in Adamawa

BOKO-WOMEN

No fewer   than 500 houses were destroyed in the Kubi and Watu villages in Michika Local Government Areas of Adamawa State as the suspected Boko Haram insurgents operated unchallenged in one of its recent attacks.

Members of the community, who spoke on the telephone from their hideouts told Vanguard that the absence of military personnel in Michika and its environs was responsible for the heavy damage inflicted on them.

“Since the complete take-over of Michika and Madagali by the insurgents on September 7, 2014, no single soldier has been noticed in the area. The only thing we see are jet fighters which come from Yola, the state capital to drop bombs and go back. Our people are helpless as the insurgents control everything in our local government,” they lamented.

According to them, the insurgents were having a field day maiming and killing people and leaving their dead bodies at the mercy of vultures and pigs.

They further alleged that only Vimtim, the hometown of the Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Air marshal Alex Badeh was fortified by the military in the area.

They then urged the Federal Government, to as a matter of urgency deploy military personnel to the affected areas to give the people a sense of belonging.

The people Michika faulted the actions of the political class in the state, whom they accused of abandoning them at their trying periods .

What were you up to when you were 8-years-old? Probably something less impressive than Evan.

Evan is the kid behind EvanTubeHD, which is a family-friendlyYouTube channel where Evan (and occasionally his sister or mom) reviews toys and video games. And Evan rakes in $1.3 million a year from posting his toy reviews to YouTube.

It started out as a fun project Evan and his dad embarked on together. The pair would make Angry Birds stop-motion videos, and according to a Newsweek interview with Jared, Evan’s father, “all of the proceeds from the channel goes into investment and savings accounts for their children.”

Jared says they have a dedicated sales team that sells ads and negotiates deals with brands and businesses.

“These include both ads that appear in and around each video as well as products actually featured in our videos. The majority of the revenue is generated by the ads placed on the video itself,” he says. “Outside of the networks, YouTube/Google handles all ad placement within the site. Content creators have a few options regarding the format of ads they would like to allow on their videos. But the actual ads are chosen by some higher power.”

Ebola-hit Liberia secures food staples; growth outlook gloomy-minister

Liberia, the West African state hardest-hit by the worst Ebola outbreak in history, has secured imports of basic food staples until December, but the hit to its mining sector may tip the economy into recession next year, a minister said on Thursday.

Commerce and Industry Minister Alex Addy also urged foreign donors to do more – and more quickly – to help tackle the hemorrhagic fever epidemic which has killed almost 3,000 people since March this year, mostly in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Ebola death toll more than 2,900 –WHO

The World Health Organisation has announced that the death toll of people killed by Ebola Virus Disease has reached at least 2,917.

According to the global health body, the casualty figure is driven by the continuing rapid spread of the disease in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The New York Times reported that the UN agency made the announcement on Thursday.

At least 2,909 people have died in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, with 6,242 reported Ebola cases overall, according to the latest report of the United Nations health agency. Nigeria and Senegal have recorded a total of eight deaths and 21 cases of infection.

Blackberry introduces dual-control keyboard phone into the market

blackberry new

Blackberry has launched a distinctive handset featuring a square screen and a keyboard that offers both physical keys and touch-enabled gesture controls.

It said work-focused users in particular should benefit from the Blackberry Passport’s innovations.

Sales of the company’s handsets – which are powered by its own operating system – have been in decline.

Analysts said the new device should appeal to existing Blackberry owners but might struggle to win over others.

The Canadian company’s chief operating officer said the handset’s release was part of a broader turnaround strategy led by John Chen, who became chief executive in November.

“You’re going to see us be very focused,” Marty Beard told the BBC.

“Potentially, in the past we got a little too broad a little too aggressively.

Islamic fighters advance in Syria despite US strikes

news_stockUnited States planes pounded Islamic State positions in Syria for a second day on Wednesday, but the strikes did not halt the fighters’ advance in a Kurdish area where fleeing refugees told of villages burnt and captives beheaded, Reuters reports.

President Barack Obama, speaking at the United Nations, asked the world to join together to fight the militants and vowed to keep up military pressure against them.

“The only language understood by killers like this is the language of force, so the United States of America will work with a broad coalition to dismantle this network of death,” Obama said in 40 minute speech to the UN General Assembly.

Islamist militants in Algeria boasted in a video they had beheaded a French hostage captured on Sunday to punish Paris for joining air strikes against Islamic State in Iraq. The French government said it would not be deterred from taking action against “an association of assassins”.

2015: Atiku declares, says corruption worse under Jonathan

Former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar

A former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2015 Presidential election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

Abubakar, at a ceremony held at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja on Wednesday, explained that   his desire to become President was born out of the need to give back to the nation.

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha and the Publisher of Leadership, Sam Nda-Isaiah, had also declared interest in the APC presidential ticket. A former Head of State and National Leader of the APC, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.); Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, and Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, have been reported   to also have interest in the ticket.

A confident Abubakar told his supporters during the ceremony that he had the capacity to bring people together and turn things around for the better in the country.

He pointed out that the glaring mismatch between “our potential and our achievements provides a golden opportunity” for him to lead Nigerians to rekindle their innovative instinct and turn the Nigerian dream into a reality.

He explained that in spite of many challenges faced by Nigerians, they had refused to give up on the country.

The former Vice-President said the 2015 elections were about Nigerian youths and the nation’s future.

He stressed that the nation, under the current administration, had failed to provide the required environment for the youth to reach their full potential.

The former vice-president said, “It is inspiring that amidst difficulties and growing anxiety over the future of our country, our people have refused to succumb to despair and hopelessness.

“This never-say-die attitude gives me immense hope and it is one of the reasons why I can never give up on Nigeria.”

Reacting to the agitation for generational shift, he said his generation owed younger Nigerians the responsibility of offering its political shoulders to them to climb upon.

This, he said, was necessary to improve their vision and expand their horizon.

He noted that it was this trans-generational collaboration and partnership that represented the best model to create the future that the nation desired and deserved.

Nigeria, he said, should never again be subjected to leadership experimentation or learning on the job.

He recalled that the Olusegun Obasanjo administration which he was a part of successfully reformed some critical sectors of the economy such as telecommunications and the capital market.

Abubakar said, “As Vice-President   from 1999 to 2007, I worked closely with my boss, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who is a passionate defender of Nigerian unity.

“We focused on macro-economic stability and transforming critical areas such as banking, insurance, oil and gas, telecommunications, pension and the civil service.

“We created institutions that should lay the foundation for good governance and accountability such as the Bureau of Public Procurement, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, SERVICOM, whose golden rule is ‘Serve others as you would like to be served.’ Sadly, most of these institutions are now mere shadows of themselves.”

He said the Obasanjo administration was able to deliver because it had vision, commitment and dedication .

The former Vice-President expressed sadness that rather than pay down the nation’s debts, “our borrowing has been on the increase even at a time the price of oil has consistently been above $100 per barrel since the inception of the Goodluck Jonathan administration.’’

He argued that resentment, disillusionment and hopelessness were the factors on which insecurity and disharmony thrived.

Nigeria, he said, was more divided today than at any other time since the civil war, adding that there was a disturbing rise in ethnic nationalism and religious bigotry because “we have a governance deficit.”

The aspirant said, “Our country seems to be on auto pilot with no one in charge. Nigeria   now more than ever before, needs a strong, dynamic, decisive, competent and visionary leadership that can halt the current drift of the ship of state.   Corruption needs to be fought, jobs need to be created,   our infrastructure needs to be rebuilt,   social services need to be provided and insecurity needs to be tackled in a decisive, robust and multi-pronged way.”

While commending the leadership of the APC for adopting the modified open primaries in selecting its flag bearers at all levels, Abubakar said the party remained the most potent political force to end years of PDP’s dominance of the political space.

The leader of the National Assembly caucus of the APC, Senator George Akume, who spoke on behalf of other party leaders at the event, said the APC has within its ranks, the men and women who have what it takes to rebuild Nigeria.

Five politicians, lawyers   ask court to stop Jonathan

Meanwhile,   three politicians and two lawyers have separately asked a Federal High Court in Abuja   to stop   Jonathan and Vice-President Namadi Sambo from re-contesting in 2015.

The plaintiffs argued in their suits that by the virtue of constitutional provisions, the President and the Vice-President, had previously been elected for one single term of four years.

Two politicians – Adejumo Ajagbe and Olatoye Wahab – filed the first suit while two lawyers and another politician filed the second on September 19 .

The lawyers are   Mase Acho and Saeeq Sarki. The third is Murtala Abubakar.

Ajagbe, who claimed to be a member of the PDP in Lagos State, and Wahab, a member of the APC in Ogun State, said they were presidential aspirants whose interest would be jeopardised if Jonathan and Sambo were not barred.

The two plaintiffs, who engaged the services of four Senior Advocates of Nigeria, joined the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Attorney General of the Federation as   defendants.

The SANs   are James Ocholi, A. J. Owonikoko, Okon Efut and Mahmud Magaji.

The suit marked, FHC/ABJ/CS/662/2014, was assigned to Justice Ahmed Mohammed but the two defendants have yet to respond to it.

The plaintiffs argued that by   virtue of the oaths taken by Jonathan and Sambo following the death of President Umaru Yar’adua in 2010 and their subsequent re-election in 2011, both of them were deemed to have completed the two terms allowed by law.

Their statement of claim read in part, “That being so, the reference to ‘two previous elections’ in Section 137(1)(b) of the Constitution includes two previous oath of allegiance and oath of office as President.

“It is therefore safe to conclude that a Vice President, who had taken the oath of allegiance and oath of office for two previous terms as President is, in law, deemed to have been elected into the office of President at two previous elections, thereby standing disqualified to contest another election into that office.”

They raised five questions for the court’s determination and sought seven reliefs, including an order of perpetual injunction, restraining the AGF and INEC from accepting as candidate in the 2015 presidential election, anybody caught by “two-previous election limit and eight-year term limit.”

Military kills Abubakar Shekau ‘again’

Picture of Abacha Geidam (aka Abubakar Shekau) which was released by the military in Abuja... on Wednesday

The Defence authorities have confirmed the killing of the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, during one of the four encounters with insurgents in Kodunga, Borno State between September 12 and 17, 2014.

The Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, said during a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday, that the corpse of the insurgents’ leader was identified by the people of Kodunga.

He said that Shekau whose real name was Mohammed Bashir   had used other names like Abacha Abdullahi Geidam and Damasack.

Olukolade illustrated the Defence authorities claim with pictures of the bullet-ridden corpse of Shekau   and a video of the battle in which he was killed.

Four days ago,     the Cameroon Concordreported that the Cameroonian troops killed Shekau during a cross border aerial bombardment of his hideout in Nigeria on Saturday.

To prove the killing, the newspaper also published photographs of the bearded   Shekau whom it said then usually appeared in videos as the leader of Boko Haram.

But Olukolade dismissed the claim that   Shekau was killed by Cameroonian security forces within Nigeria.

“There was no raid whatsoever by Cameroon or any foreign forces in any part of Nigeria’s territory in pursuit of terrorists as claimed in some reports allegedly quoting Cameroon authorities,” he had said.

He had also claimed     in a tweet on Wednesday last week that troops who repelled an attack by insurgents in Kodunga,   captured a high ranking terrorist leader who was being treated in military medical facility.

On Tuesday, a Nigerian journalist known to have done in-depth stories on Boko Haram, Ahmad Salkida, said he had it on “good authority” that   Shekau was hale and hearty.

Writing on his Twitter handle, Salkida, who is on self-exile in the United Arab Emirates, claimed that Shekau was not the one in the pictures of a corpse that trended on Monday on social media after they were published by the Cameroon Concord.

“Mark my words: I have it on authority that Shekau is well and alive. The pictures going round are not that of the person who torments us with his group,” the journalist   added.

The spokesperson for the Department of State Service had in May claimed that “the real Abubakar Shekau had been taken out.”

“Boko Haram has become a franchise; anybody can assume and lay claim to any name. What   I know is that the original Abubakar Shekau is dead; the person claiming to be the national leader now is not the original Abubakar Shekau.

“If security sources tell you that somebody is dead, you don’t have to come out and doubt that,” Ogar said.

A former spokesman for the Joint Task Force in the North-East, Sagir Musa, had in a statement in August 2013, also   said that Shekau might have been killed during a battle with troops in June last year.

But during the news conference on Wednesday, the defence spokesman   said that many top commanders of Boko Haram were also killed in the four battles against the insurgents   between September 12 and 17.

Olukolade added that the military was determined to   eliminate anybody, who claims to be Shekau, a name which, he said had become a brand for the leader of the insurgents.

He said, “Nigerian troops have been conducting coordinated air and land operations in furtherance of efforts at containing the terrorists in the North -East. . Somehow, it became apparent that the terrorists, in continuation of their campaign of terror, were determined to take over communities around Maiduguri, which is their prime target.

“There was, therefore, the need to ensure that communities such as Kodunga were protected. It is noteworthy that the terrorists made no less than four attempts between September 12 and 17 to violate the security and enter Kodunga to perpetrate their atrocities. Air and land forces were subsequently deployed to handle the situation.

“The convoy of combat vehicles typical of terrorists’ mission that involved their top commanders was   engaged by   land and air forces. Several of the terrorists, including some of their commanders, lost their lives in the encounters which lasted an average of about five hours each. The troops captured some of the terrorists and their equipment.

“In the course of those encounters, one Mohammed Bashir, who has been acting or posing on videos as the deceased Abubakar Shekau, the eccentric character known as leader of the group, died.

“Since the name Shekau has become a brand name for the terrorists’ leader, the Nigerian military remains resolute to serve justice to anyone who assumes that designation or title as well as all terrorists that seek to violate the freedom and territory of Nigeria.

“On restoring normalcy after the encounters, inhabitants of the community who were victims of their activities corroborated information on the identity of Bashir Mohammed alias Abubakar Shekau, alias Abacha Abdullahi Geidam alias Damasack, etc.

“Indeed, the recent devastation on the leadership of the insurgents is attributable to the renewed commitment to the mission of eradicating terrorism in our country.”

Olukolade also said that   135 insurgents surrendered   their weapons to troops in Borno and Adamawa states on Tuesday evening.

He added that   88 of them surrendered at Mairiga/Buniyadi while another set of 45 were arrested around Mubi-Michika.

The Defence spokesman said the insurgents   were undergoing interrogation in strict compliance with standard procedure.

“A total of 135 terrorists yesterday (Tuesday) evening surrendered along with their equipment to troops around the Biu Local Government Area. A group of 88 submitted themselves at Mairiga/Buni – Yadi while another group of 45 terrorists were taken in around Mubi – Michika. They are all being interrogated and processed in conformity with the dictates of standard best practices,” he added.

The Defence Headquarters had earlier said that 10 insurgents surrendered at Kawuri on Monday and another five at Konduga on Saturday.

This brings the total number of insurgents who have surrendered after the Kodunga battles   to 150.

Investigation by The PUNCH on Wednesday revealed that troops were intensifying a house-to-house search   in Madagali, Gulak, Michika,   Bazza and other communities in Adamawa State   for 70 fleeing insurgents.

It was gathered that six members of the sect   were caught by troops at a refugee centre in Yola on Wednesday.

FG’ll celebrate B’Haram surrender not Shekau’s death – Maku

Meanwhile, the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, said on Wednesday that the Federal Government was more interested in   Boko Haram members laying down their arms than in the said death of   Shekau.

Maku told journalists after   the weekly   Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja on Wednesday   that the government was not interested in celebrating the death of the terrorist.

“The Federal Government would be happier if the Boko Haram leader and his group laid down their weapons and embraced peace,” he said.

The minister added, “Government has a responsibility to respect human rights unlike members of the Boko Haram sect who have thrown away all sympathy for human lives and are prepared to kill people just for killing’s sake.

“For us it is immaterial if the leader of the terrorist group is killed or not. We want them to drop their weapons and embrace peace. We want them to drop their weapons, stop killing their parents and innocent people and accept peace.”

Applicant sentenced to 36 months in prison for extortion

A Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court in Aso Pada, Nasarawa State on Thursday sentenced a 20-year-old applicant, Yakubu Gozi, to 36 months in prison for extortion.

The presiding jugde, Mr Albert Maga, sentenced Gozi after he pleaded guilty to stealing a Tecno cell phone.

Gozi pleaded for leniency saying, “I don’t know what always come over me, even when I don’t want to, I find myself stealing again, please have mercy on me.’’

Maga refused to give the convict an option of fine, saying that the punishment would deter others who might want to do same.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Adaji, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Sept. 21 at Aso ‘C’, Mararaba in Nasarawa State.

Adaji said one Mary Nuhu of One Man Village reported the matter at the ‘A’ Divisional Police Station on Sept. 21.

He added that the complainant was coming back from work when the commercial motorcycle she took had a flat tyre.

The prosecutor said that the convict appeared from nowhere and snatched her Tecno cell phone valued at N4,000 as she stood by the roadside waiting for another motorcycle.

The convict took to his heels immediately but was caught before he could go further, contravening the provisions of Section 292 of the Penal Code.

Adaji said Gozi had once been arraigned in the same court for stealing, but was granted bail.

A Sick Chibok Girl Abandoned By dreaded Boko Haram Found

news_stockA girl believed to be one of the missing Chibok girls in Boko Haram’s captivity has been found close to the village of Kwarihi near Mubi in Borno State, where she was abandoned.

She was said to have been thrown out of a moving Volkswagen Golf car into a bush where she wandered for two days before been seen.

This was disclosed yesterday, September 24, by Hosea Tsambido, the Chairman of the Chibok community while speaking at the gathering of the #BringBackOurGirls campaigners in Abuja.

According to him, the girl who looked like she was mentally unstable gave her name as Susanna Ishaya.

She was picked up at Kwarihi village and handed over to one of the Chibok parents who took her to the hospital after which she would be properly questioned.

Tsambido said: “When she was asked, she gave her name as Susanna Ishaya but right now we are not sure if it is her real name until she is really treated because the people that saw her said she is both mentally and physically sick and has been taken to the hospital.

“We believe that she was probably abandoned by Boko Haram because of her health.”

He disclosed this on a day Borno State Government announced a scholarship of N1.4million each for 36 of the 57 Chibok school girls who managed to escape from Boko Haram captivity.

Governor Kashim Shettima said the 36 girls have been admitted into international schools in Abuja, Kaduna and Plateau States, pleading not to disclose the names of the schools.

Over 200 girls were abducted on April 14 from their school in Chibok by Boko Haram. Sadly, asied the 57 who escaped, the others are yet to be rescued.

A controversial report had come up on Tuesday that more of the girls had been released and driven to Maiduguri but Brig. Gen. Chris Olukolade, the spokesman for the Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters later disclosed that the girls spotted in the buses were not Chibok girls.

It was recently reported that the insurgents have agreed to swap all the girls for 18 key sect commanders currently in detention.

52 Boko haram members arrested in Biu, Borno state

52 Boko Haram members have reportedly been arrested in separate operations in Biu Borno state by security operatives. According to military sources, the men were arrested between yesterday Sept. 23rd and today September 24th.

A military source said some of the sect men had boarded a truck in a bid to leave the state but were arrested after the truck driver notified soldiers at a checkpoint that passengers in his vehicle had threatened to kill him if he did not take them out of the state.
“We arrested over 50 members of the Islamic sect following tips we got from the driver as well as locals. I can tell you they are cooperating and giving us useful information” the security source said
A member of the local volunteer group, Aliyu Mamza, said his group was also instrumental to the arrest of the sect members. According to him, 46 BH men hid in the compartment of the truck meant for transporting goats and were exposed after the driver of the truck notified soldiers. Six other members were arrested at the Biu bus station as they were about boarding a bus out of Borno.

Imo State, F.Govt in a logg ahead over Owerri-PH road project road

Imo road

The deplorable condition of the Owerri/ Port Harcourt expressway has become a source of great concern to motorists plying the road, especially from the Imo State end, starting from Umuagwo to the Umupapu, a stretch of over six kilometers. And with the rainy season not yet over, the road has become more nightmarish, forcing motorists to take the Owerri/Aba expressway, which is a longer route to Port Harcourt. For the Imo State government, the abandonment of the section of the road that connects Imo and Rivers State was more of politics as the state has wondered why a contractor handling such a major interstate road would decide to stop work abruptly if not at the instance of the Federal government.

Governor Okorocha raising the alarm over the deplorable state of the road lamented that it was nothing but a glaring death trap.

“The road has become a glaring death trap with some Imo indigenes and some other people losing their lives either through accidents or armed robbery attacks that occur on that part of the road almost on daily basis.

“With every sense of responsibility the Federal Government is called upon to fix the road without further delay to save Imo people and other road users from further deaths.  It is worrisome where the contractor handling a major project like the Port Harcourt/Owerri expressway could get to the point where the road connects Imo State and stopped, and since then, nobody has seen the need for that part of the road to be done so that the people of the state and other users can enjoy it because all Nigerians irrespective of their political affiliations use the road.

“But it is avowedly regrettable that the contractor doing the road could get to Imo State side of the project and stopped work for quite a long time now,” the governor lamented.

Okorocha equally declared that the  READ MORE ON THIS STORY HERE

600,000 farmers benefit from GES in Adamawa

news_stockNo fewer than 600,000 farmers in Adamawa are to benefit from subsidised fertiliser under the Federal Government’s Growth Enhancement Scheme this year.

The Director in charge of Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in the state, Dr. Walia Hamman, stated this on Wednesday in Yola at the flag-off of the second phase of distribution of the commodity under the scheme.

Hamman said the figure was higher than last year’s 193,000 farmers that benefitted from the scheme, adding that the increase was in response to the State Government’s request to the federal government.

“I wish to inform you that on the request of the Acting Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, graciously approved the scaling up of GES in Adamawa state.

“Over 600,000 farmers will benefit, as against 193,000 farmers that benefitted from earlier GES,” he said.

Hamman, who explained that under the programme, each farmer would be given two bags, said he was optimistic that the gesture would lead to bumper harvest.

In his address, the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Chief John Elias, said government had received supply of 1.2 million bags of fertiliser for this cropping season.

Elias said government was also making preparations for dry season farming and advised farmers who incurred losses as a result of flooding to take advantage of the programme.

However, he warned dealers who would handle the sales across the state to avoid sharp practices, saying that government would monitor the exercise and sanction anyone found wanting.

In his remarks, the state Chairman, Agro Dealers Association, Alhaji Usman Bapullo, said the association had established 45 centres across the state for the sale to ensure hitch-free sales of the commodity.

Bapullo thanked government for the confidence reposed in them and assured that they would not disappoint the people.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that farmers are to pay N2,700 per bag of fertiliser as against N6,000 in the market.

Jonathan’s endorsement as sole candidate, ridicule of democracy -APC

news_stockThe All Progressives Congress has strongly condemned the endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan as the sole candidate of the PDP for next year’s presidential election, to the exclusion of all other candidates, calling the endorsement nothing but a mockery of democracy.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party also said the endorsement has come at a great price to Nigerians, considering the obvious deals that were struck to make President Jonathan the sole PDP candidate.

It said the parody of democracy that the endorsement represents has exposed the shameless hypocrisy of the PDP, which is ever so eager to accuse other parties of lacking in internal democracy.

It said, ”Obviously, those fellows in the PDP have never heard of the saying that those who must come to equity must come with clean hands. PDP, where is your own internal democracy now that you have turned your party into a fiefdom controlled by one and only one person only?

”While endorsements are part and parcel of democracy, they are never done to the exclusion of other candidates. This is simply not democratic. When then candidate Barrack Obama was endorsed by his party’s bigwigs to contest the US Presidency, the party never excluded Hillary Clinton from its primaries. That’s how it is done.”

The party said the price being paid for Jonathan’s endorsement by Nigeria is simply too heavy, considering that the PDP Governors who spearheaded the endorsement have now secured perpetual immunity from prosecution by anti-graft bodies, including the EFCC and the ICPC; the automatic tickets for all first-term PDP Governors, whether or not

Shekau is well, alive –Boko Haram negotiator

news_stockBorno-born journalist said to be a close ally of Boko Haram, Ahmad Salkida, has dismissed the reported killing of a top leader of the outlawed Islamist sect.

Salkida, who is on self-exile in the United Arab Emirates over alleged threats to his life, said he has it on “authority” that Abubakar Shekau was hale and hearty.

Writing on Twitter, Salkida, who is widely reported to have had an unfettered access to the late Boko Haram founder, Mohammed Yusuf, stated that residents of the various communities in the north east have yet to feel the positive impact of the recent gains in the counter-insurgency operations.

Salkida claimed that Shekau, who he had discussions with recently during a failed attempt to negotiate an end to the continued incarceration of the Chibok girls was not the one being portrayed in a picture circulating online.

“Mark my words: I have it on authority that Shekau is well and alive. The picture going round is not the person who torments us with his group,” the journalist who now works as an import and export agent of agricultural products and textile materials in Dubai, wrote on Twitter.

According to him, the Nigerian Army has only been able to repel the taking over of Konduga and Maiduguri but has failed in reclaiming the communities overrun during the sect’s recent expansionist drive.

Ebola: Plateau State Govt begins distribution of Ebola test kit to schools

news_stockThe Plateau Government said it would begin the distribution of Ebola test kit to all schools in the state on Wednesday.

Dr. Fom Dakwak, the state Commissioner for Health, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Pankshin, Plateau, that the kit purchased by the government had arrived.

He said that the distribution became necessary because the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Plateau chapter, had insisted that schools would not resume until the kit were provided.

The union, through its Chairman, Mr Gunshin Yarlings, had directed teachers not to comply with the Sept. 22 resumption date issued by the Federal Government until the kit were provided in all the schools.

Teachers in the Plateau central and southern zones, who showed up in schools on Monday, were chased away by union officials.

Mr Leestock Edward, Chairman, NUT Pankshin Local Government branch, said, “We have to ensure that all schools remain closed until the health kit to test pupils and students are provided in the schools.”

US told Iran of its plan to attack ISIL, assured Assad not targeted

US told Iran of its plan to attack ISIL, assured Assad not targeted

The United States assured Tehran that it would not target the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad

The United States informed Iran in advance of its intention to strike ISIL militants in Syria and assured Tehran that it would not target the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a senior Iranian official told Reuters.

The communication, confirmed in part by a senior U.S. State Department official, may signal the estranged foes are inching toward a level of contacts rarely seen in over three decades since the 1979 Islamic revolution when a hostage crisis prompted Washington to sever ties with Tehran.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the senior Iranian official said Tehran had voiced concern for Assad, its closest regional ally and the recipient of Iranian military support during a Syrian civil war now in its fourth year.

“Iran was concerned about Assad’s position and his government being weakened in case of any action against IS (ISIL) in Syria and brought this issue up in meetings with Americans,” the senior Iranian official said.

“This issue was first discussed in Geneva and then was discussed thoroughly in New York where Iran was assured that Assad and his government will not be targeted in case of any military action against Daesh (ISIL) in Syria.”

The Iranian official said Iran was informed separately in advance of the airstrikes launched by Washington and Arab allies against ISIL positions in Syria for the first time.

Asked about the assurance that Syrian government forces would not be targeted, the senior U.S. State Department official told Reuters: “We communicated our intentions, but not specific timing or targets, to the Iranians. As we’ve said, we won’t be coordinating military action with Iran. And of course we won’t be sharing intelligence with Iran either.”

NUCLEAR TALKS

The public communication has included some mixed signals.

Both Iran and the United States acknowledge having an interest in defeating ISIL.

Tehran has called on the world to fight the militants, who stand accused of a wave of violence, beheadings and massacres of civilians while taking over swaths of territory in Syria and Iraq.

Speaking to senior editors in New York, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani stopped short of endorsing or condemning the airstrikes by the United States and Arab allies, though he raised questions about its legality.

He described this week as an important one for his country’s talks with world powers, including the United States, which are meant to forge a long-term accord by Nov. 24 that would end sanctions on Iran in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ruled out cooperating with the United States to tackle the militant group.

But other Iranian officials have told Reuters that Tehran would be ready to work with Western powers to stop the militants in return for concessions in the nuclear talks on Tehran’s uranium enrichment program.

On Monday the White House said it would refuse to connect nuclear talks, under way on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York this week, with the fight against the militant group.

IRAN-U.S. COOPERATION

Iranian officials told Reuters privately that Iran already was cooperating with Washington in the fight against the rebels.

“This is an intelligence matter and I can assure you geopolitical and intelligence matters will not be shared with Americans … but military and security issues are being shared to fight against IS (ISIL),” a senior Iran security official said.

Tehran’s leadership has approved the “idea of cooperation with the Americans,” he said, because it serves Iran’s interests.

Iran has occasionally shared classified information with Washington, including during the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan and the conflict in Iraq.

Gamna, KEDCO boss:Power sector to displace oil as economy booster

Power-plant

Managing Director of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), Dr. Jamil Gwamna, has predicted that the power sector in Nigeria would soon displace the oil industry as the major driver of the nation’s economy.

He spoke on Monday in Kano during an induction course for newly recruited staff of KEDCO at a ceremony with a total of 350 participants in attendance. He regretted that more than any other negative factor, Kano was dislodged as an economic power due to the problems of lack of power supply witnessed in the state and its environs in the last few years.

FG clears air on auto policy implementation

news_stockThe Federal Government has said the ongoing implementation of the Nigerian Automotive Industry Development Plan is taking its planned course, even as there is no intention to reverse the implementation process of certain aspects of the policy.

The National Automotive Council said in a statement on Tuesday that government had not reneged on its promise to shift the implementation process of certain aspects of the NAIDP till January 2015 as alleged in the press, noting that the application of the levy exemption was only being misinterpreted.
