A Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court in Aso Pada, Nasarawa State on Thursday sentenced a 20-year-old applicant, Yakubu Gozi, to 36 months in prison for extortion.

The presiding jugde, Mr Albert Maga, sentenced Gozi after he pleaded guilty to stealing a Tecno cell phone.

Gozi pleaded for leniency saying, “I don’t know what always come over me, even when I don’t want to, I find myself stealing again, please have mercy on me.’’

Maga refused to give the convict an option of fine, saying that the punishment would deter others who might want to do same.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Adaji, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Sept. 21 at Aso ‘C’, Mararaba in Nasarawa State.

Adaji said one Mary Nuhu of One Man Village reported the matter at the ‘A’ Divisional Police Station on Sept. 21.

He added that the complainant was coming back from work when the commercial motorcycle she took had a flat tyre.

The prosecutor said that the convict appeared from nowhere and snatched her Tecno cell phone valued at N4,000 as she stood by the roadside waiting for another motorcycle.

The convict took to his heels immediately but was caught before he could go further, contravening the provisions of Section 292 of the Penal Code.

Adaji said Gozi had once been arraigned in the same court for stealing, but was granted bail.
